Spring Is Here – It’s Pool Time!
I love this time of year when the birds start to sing, the grass starts to green up, and Cincinnati’s only professional sports team—the Reds—start to play. (Sorry—I forgot about the Cyclones.) And warm weather mean it is time to get out of the house and into the back yard. Time to open the pool! Don’t have one? Then it’s time to get one! Why wait? Whether it is an above ground or an in-ground, don’t find yourself watching the neighbor swimming in their pool while you await delivery and of yours. Early bird buyers have two major advantages over the procrastinators. 1) You get the years best pricing and 2), you get the early install dates. Do you really want to wait until summer is half over and the waiting list is as long as the play-list at a Bruce Springsteen concert? Which by the way, if you’ve never been to a Boss concert, you’re missing out on a GREAT concert!
But I digress. Get the pool, enjoy the ENTIRE summer, and repeat it next year… and the next year… and the next, and…. –Max
The City Pool
As a young child growing up in a blue-collar middle class steel mill town we had very few extravagant things we could do. When the malls came in it was a huge deal and also showed what was to become of a great city filled with hard working men and women who loved their family, football, and country in that order. Ashland now stands as shopping Mecca for many in the Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia tri state area but some small reminders of what it was 20 years ago still remain. My friends who still live there have wonderful families and it makes me happy to know they are doing well. On crisp fall Friday nights many families still head down to Historic Putnam Stadium and show up 7,500 strong to root on the Tomcats. My fondest memory of those years were the many days spent at the local city pool about ¼ mile from my house. The pool was larger than life at about 300 feet long and ranging in depth from 6 inches to 10 feet. It was wonderful place to spend a summer day with more than enough activities to keep you busy all day. Its sad to say the have since filled in the pool and no longer operate any of the other city pools that existed when I was a child. Things have changed in Ashland but I still look back on it as wonderful place to grow up.

Interested In An Inground Pool?
As the inground pool coordinator for Eastgate Pools, I find myself with more time on my hands at this time of year. And to be honest, the break is nice after a long summer, but a little down-time certainly goes a long way. So how about we help each other out – if you’re dreaming of an inground pool, you can benefit from my availability and help keep me busy too. Even if you prefer not to start the project until next summer, it’s never too early to begin the planning process. For instance, what pool style and size works best in your yard? How can we access the project? What layout coordinates best with your home? Will you need a retaining wall? These are just a few of the many things you should consider, so the more time you allow, the happier you will be with your decision, and my experience and expertise uniquely qualify me to help you balance functionality with esthetics. I can even create a customized three-dimensional rendering to help you visualize your new pool. So why not take advantage of my freer schedule to give your dream pool that personal touch? Contact us today to set up a meeting.
One That Always Get Me . . .
As the freezing weather arrives we begin to get questions about taking care of different seasonal products to protect against the icy temperatures. The one that always perplexes me is “How do I winterize my spa?” What?! Maybe it isn’t for everyone, but the winter is one of the best times of year to use your spa. The cold literally melts away when you immerse yourself in that 100 plus degree water. It is also great to relieve the tension that builds in your shoulders from trying so hard to stay warm throughout the day. If you normally close down your spa, I encourage you to at least give at few tries first. It is a tremendous experience. If you still want to close it down just give us a call and we can walk you through the best process for winterizing your spa…but I might still try to talk you out of it…for your own benefit of course.
Accessories, Accessories, Accessories!
I know people think of Eastgate Pools when they are interested in a spa, pool, or patio furniture, but did you know we have some unique accessory items as well? Last year we brought in some Jake and Elwood statues from “The Blues Brothers” and I purchased a set for a friend of mine that is a big fan. He loved them and they are proudly on display in his man cave. This is just one example of some of the fun items we. There are a number of whimsical outdoor pool signs and some great pool cue racks that can add some character to any rec room. You can check out a few examples here. If you are looking for a good gift idea or trying to find that finishing touch for your new finished basement come check out some of these novelty products. Hope to see you soon!!

Go Williamsburg Wildcats!!
I am proud to say that my son, Bill, will be playing varsity basketball this year at Williamsburg High School. Some of you know him as he works part time here at the store. He’s a great son (like my other two) and is very active in the school, in sports, and in the community. And all the while maintaining an ‘A’ average in all his classes. He only works Sundays this time of year but when summer rolls around, you’ll see him here a lot. So how is this pertinent to Eastgate Pools & Spas? It’s not. I just wanted to brag a little. –Max

Thanksgiving Traditions
I have been to many different Thanksgiving dinners in my life, sometimes hitting as many as five in one week, and have found that everyone does theirs a little bit different than what I grew up with. I grew up having a turkey but also having a leg of lamb. I have an Aunt who takes the meat off the turkey and bakes it with stuffing and gravy before serving. (Delicious) A friend of mine does turkey and a country ham that has cured in his basement for a couple of months. I have had regular mashed potatoes made from scratch and mashed sweet potatoes that I didn’t think I would like but ended up having seconds. It may sound like I enjoy almost all foods but I am a little picky. I don’t do cranberry sauce and if you make the mashed potatoes out of flakes I might throw them at you. We all do things a little different but the biggest thing is they are all right because we do it together. If you want I can visit you on Thanksgiving this year. Just let me know.

American Express Small Business Saturday, November 27th
It’s that most wonderful time of the year again. As a retailer every year we rack our brains trying to figure out how to become your destination for holiday shopping. This year with help from our friends at American Express we are able to stretch the holiday dollar a little farther. As a small family owned business we are happy to team up with American Express and announce November 27th is Small Business Saturday. The process of stretching that dollar farther is 2 easy steps- Just register your American Express card @smallbusinesssaturday.com through November 27th then come into the store, spend $25 or more and receive a $25 statement credit. All the terms and conditions are listed on the website when you register your card, but what a great way to support a local business like ours, and stretch your holiday dollar a little farther.
Back To School
I cannot believe it is already time for the children to go back to
school. I never did like it when my children were school age and now
that my daughter is a teacher I still dread this time of year. To me
it is an end of the time my daughter and I are off on the same days
and also the end her extra time with my granddaughter.
Now is also the time that many people with pools start to think about
closing their pools. For those with an aboveground pool it is not a
difficult task to tackle themselves. Our website has a "how to"
section under the "tips" heading. Many inground pool owners opt to
have their pool closed by a professional. It saves them time,
especially if they have a safety cover. It also assures the owner
that the job will be done correctly with no frozen pipes, pumps or
filters. This gives the owner a little extra peace of mind over the
next three seasons
Cincinnati Reds Discussions
During slow periods the staff of Eastgate Pools likes to discuss potential strategy and player moves we might suggest for the organization. Whether to keep Arthur Rhodes in the closing spot or who the starting center fielder should be. Every day after a game, guaranteed, at least 10 minutes is dedicated to the finer nuances of the previous nights game. So, as the Reds make the final push for a playoff spot, and you happen to be in our store, if you are looking for some small talk you won’t have to try hard if you talk Reds baseball.
Above Ground Liner Rehang Hint
If you are changing your above ground pool’s liner, we offer a step-by-step guide to do it right. Go to: http://www.eastgatepools.com/tips/linerinstall.htm
BIG HINT: If you have a sand base under the liner, make sure you compress the sand thoroughly on the coves. If you don’t, you will get little pieces of sand roll up between the liner and the wall when the cove compacts from the weight of the water. These pieces are then trapped, and when you vacuum the pool, the vac head brushes up against the liner and trapped sand. This causes tiny pinholes that will ultimately lead to rust and wall failure. Pack that sand. The last step should be to wash down the inside wall. Make sure to attach the spray nozzle so that you have a gentle stream of water, not a full blast that would wash the sand away. –Max
Tanning Bed Liquidation Special
We did it—again! A major east coast retailer decided to get out of the tanning bed business so we bought up everything they had. If you have been looking for a great deal on a quality in-home tanning system, we have six models to choose from. With both traditional beds and free-standing tanning booths, they will go fast. Many were floor demos and may have some small scratches and blemishes, but so what? All are new and have full warranty and are top-notch units. Don’t miss out though. Today’s great deal is tomorrow’s missed opportunity.
